Since Yma Sumac last CD (The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection) on Capitol Records back in 2000, I have felt a massive void in my life. While no new Yma Sumac album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 2000 tour in Asia. On the Brazil charts, superstar Yma Sumac’s career stalled before it left the starting gate. The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection is preety good and all the songs have a good meaning behind them.
is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined.
Najala’s Lament is a bit of a show-tune. Ataypura (High Andes) to me is the best you can get from Yma Sumac. Vocals of Yma Sumac in Bo Mambo really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm. Music of Kuyawa (Inca Love Song) is gentle, never overbearing. Tumpa (Earthquake) is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. Yma Sumac offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. Chuncho (The Forest Creatures) is another favourite of mine. The sound in Monos (Monkeys) is really warm and Yma Sumac’s signature voice is still very much present. When I listen to Suray Surita in my car when traffic ain’t going so good. Best song on the album, love it. Charming song, great melody. Huayno is one of these floating songs. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Babalu sets the tone for the entire album. In Wimoweh you won’t find any flashy solos. If you are a Yma Sumac fan, you will love Xtabay (Lure Of The Unknown Love). This is probably my favorite song on the album. Llora Corazon is one of the coolest songs Yma Sumac has ever recorded. La Pampa Y La Puna without a doubt is the standout song of The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection. I believe Virgenes Del Sol is one of the most exquisite, heartfelt songs ever written.
